Nals welcomes the mountain bike stars again

The race weekend in Nals begins with the XCE Raiffeisen Sprint elimination race on Saturday, April 9th. The spectacular circuit, peppered with various obstacles, leads through the center of Nalles. As previous editions have shown, the sprint race is a huge crowd puller. It requires great technical skill, speed and fitness from the athletes. The final is scheduled for 18 p.m. Previous venues for the Italian Championships were Ortisei (2013), Rovereto (2014) and Courmayeur (2015). The title holders are Anna Oberparleiter from Olange and Maximilian Vieider from Bolzano. Nals is one of the pioneers of this discipline. As the president of the OK, Florian Pallweber, says, hosting the Italian championship is the culmination of many years of effort. The top international athletes include the Eliminator world champions Daniel Federspiel from Austria and Alexandra Engen from Sweden. The foreign athletes are ranked separately. After the final, the award ceremony will take place, followed by the official handover of starting numbers for the cross-country race on Sunday.

International flair in the Adige Valley

The star of the event is Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjå. The Norwegian Olympic champion has won a total of 19 gold medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships. Six of these were at the marathon and five at the cross-country world championships. She has also won the overall World Cup four times and been Norwegian champion eight times. In Nals she was on the winner's podium four times. The exceptional athlete shares this record with Eva Lechner from Eppan, who will not be taking part in the Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race this year because she will be competing in a race in the United States. In the men's category, the names of Olympic bronze medalist Marco Aurelio Fontana, who won in Nals 2012, and his teammate and two-time Nals winner Manuel Fumic stand out.

Additional jumps were installed on the Nals circuit to make the course even more spectacular for both the athletes and the spectators. It measures five kilometers and is one of the most demanding cross-country routes in the world. With a height difference of 222 meters, men have to ride it seven times and women five times.

The juniors start at 10.45:12.45 a.m. while the women start the race at 14.45:XNUMX p.m. The men's start takes place at XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. Pupils and young people take part in their competitions before the juniors. The youngsters can demonstrate their riding skills in the MTB technology competition on Saturday.

The Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race is the third stop in the “Internazionali d'Italia” racing series after Maser and Milan. For the athletes, it represents an important positioning again with a view to the XCO World Cup, which begins two weeks later in Cairns, Australia. The European Championships will take place in Huskvarna, Sweden, between May 5th and 8th, while the World Championships will take place at the end of June will be held in the Czech Republic. The highlight of this year's season is the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.
