Ortler Bike Marathon: Ragnoli and Süss repeat last year's victory

In the upper Vinschgau, with start and finish in Glurns, the mountain bikers had to complete the marathon route of 86 km and 2620 m altitude. The short distance, the classic route, was 51 km and 1600 m in altitude. The participants walked through meadows and forests, past rustic mountain villages and the cultural sights of the upper Vinschgau, such as Marienberg Monastery, Churburg or Lake Reschen.

The conditions couldn't have been better. With fantastic weather, the spectators also had a lot to offer. Only in the finish sprint was Juri Ragnoli (total time 3h34'43) able to win the race ahead of Daniele Mensi (3h34'43). “We were a group of ten to twelve bikers just before the last climb. This year's race was very fast and tactical, but technically a little easier. Me and Daniele were able to get away. In the finish sprint I was able to give it my all again and was faster. It went brilliantly and winning here is very nice. Mountain biking is my passion,” said Ragnoli after the race. Third place went to the Swiss Urs Huber (3h3'37).

Swiss victory among women However, there was a Swiss victory for the women. There was no stopping Esther Süss here. She repeated her victory from last year in (4h17'44'') without giving her competitors even the slightest chance. Rebecca Robisch (4h27'52'') and Janine Schneider (4h35'26''), both from Germany, took places 2 and 3. Süss was satisfied: “The start today went very quickly. I was quick on the climbs and was soon able to pull away. I really enjoyed the race again.” The Classic winners Klaus Fontana won the Classic course (2h01'10''). There was a South Tyrolean double victory to celebrate. The 45-year-old from the Pustertal relegated Kurtatscher Johannes Schweiggl (2h05'50'') to second place. “It went great. We were a larger group at the beginning. On the climbs I always tried to give it my all, especially on the longer final climb. Here I was able to break away and bring the lead to the finish. I consciously decided on the shorter distance because I no longer have as much time for training,” said Fontana after the race. Third place in the men's short distance went to the Venetian Tiziano Carraro (2h3'2''), who started in Venice at 03 a.m. and arrived in Vinschgau three hours later. The starting field was large.

In the women's classic race, victory went to the Swiss Michèle Wittlin (2:23:18): “It was my first time taking part in the Ortler Bike Marathon. I actually wanted to do the marathon, but when I registered I decided on the shorter route based on the advice of the team. The route is spectacular and beautiful.” Second place went to the South Tyrolean Eva Maria Gatscher (2:2:23) and third place went to the Swiss Tanja Blickenstorfer (43:3:2). Ortler Bike Marathon: Ragnoli and Süss repeat last year's victory

The 4th Ortler Bike Marathon is history. The victories on Saturday went to Italian champion Juri Ragnoli and the former world champion from Switzerland, Esther Süss.
