Paulissen and Gaddoni win the premiere at Kronplatz

The probably highest quoted favorite in advance, Roel Tony Paulissen from Belgium, prevailed on the King distance over 72 km and 3.150 meters in altitude with a race time of 4:04:25. After a close fight with his opponents on the first part of the route, which leads from St. Vigil via Ritjoch and Piz de Plaies and after a loop through the Enneberg valley, Paulissen was able to pull away a little on the first climb towards Kronplatz, so that he can already record 2.275 minutes behind his closest pursuer Luca Ronchi on the 2 m of the ski mountain. After another 30 km on downhill routes and forest roads on the north side of Kronplatz, Paulissen was able to almost double his lead and brought him safely to the finish, where numerous spectators and imperial weather welcomed him as winner and king. Paulissen's teammate from the Torpado Factory Team, Riccardo Chiarini, came second, +3:46 behind. In the last part of the route he was able to catch up and overtake Luca Ronchi, who had been second up to that point. Ronchi finally finished third with +4:54. There are further top placings for Marzio Deho (4th) and Giacomo Antonello (5th).

“It is a very selective race with diverse passages. I was riding a full-suspension bike to take advantage of the speed on the freeride routes and the calculation worked out perfectly. I am very happy about this victory because it is, so to speak, my home race,” said the new KronpltzKing Roel Paulissen from Belgium.

Elena Gaddoni is the Kronplatz queen

The athlete from Romagna and multiple Italian champion, who was also one of the absolute favorites, can control the first part of the race, which is tailor-made for her, with quite difficult gradients. The stronger Katazina Sosna from Lithuania, on the other hand, can catch up on the flat connecting part, but is then shaken off again a bit on the first climb to Kronplatz. Over the 72 km distance, Elena Gaddoni then defends her lead until the finish at 2.275 m above sea level, where the stopwatch stops at 5:04:56, exactly one hour after the winner of the men's race reached the finish line. The Lithuanian Katazina Sosna, 10 years her junior, reached the finish line exhausted and in tears in second place, +5:26 behind, while the experienced Katrin Schwing from Germany completed the podium in third place with +10:59. The Austrian Verena Krenslehner-Schmid came fourth with +13:12.

“It was a race in which I was able to exploit my physical characteristics and withstand the attack of Katazina Sosna, who is stronger than me on the flats. The last climb to Kronplatz is murderously difficult,” said Gaddoni immediately after reaching the finish line.

Wohlgemuth and Zucca win the short distance

In the Prince Classik distance of 42 km and 2.000 m, 18-year-old Michael Wohlgemuth from Sarntal prevailed with a final time of 2:35:18 and beat the licensed riders Günther Huber from the Rainer Wurz team from Gais and Antonio Camozzi from Lombardy finished with a lead of 2:40 and 3:29 respectively. Notable achievements also for the current head coach of the Swiss women's national biathlon team, Armin Auchentaller from Antholz, as 5th in the short distance, currently on training camp with his athletes in his home valley and bronze medalist from Sochi Lukas Hofer, biathlete from Montal, who finished 2nd :47:43 recorded a total of 13th time over the short distance.

With a total time of 3:19:04, the Italian Lorena Zocca from SC Barbieri becomes the Princess of Kronplatz 2016 after a great race over the short distance. With a little less than 7 minutes behind, Patrizia Romanello is in second place, Patrizia D'Amato is third.

The two-time marathon world champion Roel Paulissen, who has lived in Antholz for many years, and Italian champion Elena Gaddoni won the first edition of the KronplatzKing from St. Vigil high up the famous ski mountain. 300 athletes from 12 nations took part.
