Rabensteiner is crowned European champion

With the bronze medal from the 2018 European Championships in his luggage, Villandro's Fabian Rabensteiner rode to the top on Sunday. The 100-year-old was no match for the 31 kilometers over hill and dale and demanding climbs. Sandra Mairhofer was also at the forefront. The 29-year-old ultimately missed the podium unfortunately.

The continent's best marathon mountain bikers took part on the demanding route in Jablonné v Podještdí, Czech Republic. The first few kilometers were purely a formality - the middle part was supposed to show what you're made of. So it was a surprising sight when Fabian Rabensteiner led the field at kilometer 63, closely followed by his closest competitor Krzyszstof Lukasik from Poland. Other athletes were already over 25 seconds behind the top duo and a duel for the title was looming.

In the end, Rabensteiner had more grains than the Pole and sensationally won the European championship title after 3.53,30:29 hours. With a lead of 2 seconds he beat Lukasik to second place, while a local hero took the bronze medal, Jaroslav, Kulhavý. Mairhofer was left with nothing but sheet metal Celebrations for the men, the ungrateful fourth place for the women. In the end, Taistner Sandra Mairhofer was over two minutes short of the podium and third-placed Lombard Claudia Peretti.

At the front, the Spaniard Natalia Fischer Egusquiza drove away from everyone. With a time of 4.09,07:4.14,06 hours, she was the fastest on the course and in turn won the European championship title. Silver went to the Swiss Janina Wüst (XNUMX:XNUMX hours).
