Switzerland dominates in Nalles

In the sprint he left the Frenchman Stephane Tempier behind, while his compatriot Maxime Marotte came third.

The demanding circuit in Nals is usually not for debutants, but on Sunday the emphasis was on “usually”. Because Mathias Flückiger was the exception with his victory in the 18th edition of the Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race. After the tour on Saturday, the Swiss said: “I really like the route, I think I can have a say.”

Stephane Tempier was Flückiger's biggest opponent: the biker from the Bianchi Countervail team placed second and thus took the third podium at the classic in the Adige Valley. Third-placed Maxime Marotte crossed the finish line more than a minute behind the leading duo.

European champion Florian Vogel (Focus XC Team) came fourth, followed by the best Italian Gioele Bertolini (Team Focus Selle Italia). However, the race was disappointing for Marco Aurelio Fontana (Team Bianchi Countervail), last year's winner crossed the finish line in eleventh place. The best South Tyrolean in 15th place is Fabian Rabensteiner, the Eisacktaler relegated his “neighbor” Gerhard Kerschbaumer from Verdings to 16th place.

Double victory for Switzerland among the women

In the women's category, U23 world champion Sina Frei interrupted the domain of series winner Gunn-Rita Dahle. The Swiss broke away from the start together with Dahle and the Pole Maja Wloszczowska. The Pole fell later in the race and was no longer able to fight for victory. In the second part of the race, however, the Swiss Linda Indergand was able to come up from behind the field, first overtaking Wloszczowska and then Dahle. At the finish, Indergand was eleven seconds behind the winner.

Next stop: San Marino

The six leaders will try to defend their leader jersey next Sunday in San Marino. It will be the first stage in the 18th year history of the “Internazionali d'Italia Series” to take place on foreign soil.

In his first participation in the Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race, 29-year-old Mathias Flückiger from the Thömus-RN Racing Team dominated the race in Nals.
