Tempier and Free Rule in Nals – Kerschbaumer 4.

The Marlene South Tyrol Sunshine Race has been a constant in the international cycling racing calendar for 19 years. Same this Sunday. Cross-country professionals from all over the world competed in top-class races.

Once again it was the Frenchman Stephane Tempier who left his mark on the “Internazionali d'Italia” stage. Tempier had already won the start of the most important Italian racing series in Andora on the Ligurian coast. In Nals he improved and won ahead of his compatriot Jordan Sarrou (+18 seconds).

“The start of the race was very intense,” explained Stephane Tempier, “but on the first climb I noticed that I have good legs, so I was able to increase the rhythm from lap to lap. Personally, I was afraid of Kerschbaumer, who is at home here and was one of the favorites, but as soon as I was able to pull away I knew that I could have him under control until the finish.”

“Overall it was a good race, I’m happy with fourth place. The level was very high, my current form is good. Of course a podium finish would have been nice. “Sooner or later I want to be on the podium in Nals,” emphasized Kerschbaumer. “My plan worked” In the women's race, victory went to the Swiss Sina Frei. The co-favorite won in 1:19.46 hours and relegated the Dutchwoman Anne Tauber (+37) and the Ukrainian Jana Belomoina (+2.01) to second and third place.

“I am happy with the result, especially in such a tough race,” explains Sina Frei at the finish. “I found the terrain very difficult, so I wanted to start well and control the race from the front. “Fortunately, I managed to do this and my plan worked,” emphasized Frei. Eva Lechner from Eppan finished the race as the best “Azzurra” in seventh place (+5.03), Greta Seiwald from Casies took 14th place, Eva Maria Gatscher from Bolzano ended up in 23rd place. “Something special for me” “I think I drove a good race. I thought the route would be more difficult due to the weather conditions, but that wasn't the case. I know this route very well and it was enough to drive with less tire pressure to get better grip. Being back at the start here at home was something special for me, I was cheered on from the first to the last corner,” said Lechner after the race.

The woman from Eppan has already won the race four times, but has not taken part in the last few years because she had to attend appointments overseas as an athlete on the US Luna team. Lechner last took second place in Nals in 2015. Lechner has been competing for the Italian Torpado team since the beginning of this mountain bike season. South Tyroleans impress in young talent categories The young South Tyrolean athletes also achieved good performances. Jan Laner from Gais took fourth place in the juniors.

The mountain bikers from St. Lorenzen in particular were able to impress in the youth classes. Noemi Plankensteiner won the U17 age group, her teammate Sophie Auer triumphed in the U16 category.
