Much honor for South Tyrol's top mountain bikers

On Sunday, Kerschbaumer achieved one of the greatest successes in South Tyrol's mountain bike history with silver at the Cross-Country World Championships in Lenzerheide, Switzerland ( see also SportNews video and reports ).

While Kerschbaumer was welcomed with a celebration in his home community of Verdings on Tuesday evening, honors from the regional cycling association were on the program in the Raiffeisen pavilion on Wednesday evening. Not only Kerschbaumer, but all mountain bikers from South Tyrol who took part in the World and European Championships for the “Azzurri” this season were honored.

In addition to Kerschbaumer, eyes were primarily focused on Sophie Auer. The athlete from SV St. Lorenzen won silver in both the cross-country individual race and with the Italian relay team in the U15 age group at the European Youth Championships in the Aosta Valley at the end of August. Leni Marie Radmüller from Pusteria, who took 10th place, also took part in these European Championships. Julia Maria Graf from SC Kardaun was also competing at the European Junior Championships this year. At the Junior European Championships she came 24th in the cross-country race and 12th in the Eliminator race.

From downhillers and young athletes South Tyrol's downhill riders, who took part in the third place at the World Championships in Lenzerheide, were also celebrated. Johannes von Klebelsberg from Bozen and Veronika Widmann from Tramin competed in the elite classes and finished in 3th and 34th place respectively, while the young Rittner Hannes Alber celebrated his debut in the junior category and finished in 20rd place .

Absent from the cycling association's honor were Anna Oberparleiter from Olanger, who came 8th at the Eliminator European Championships in Graz at the end of July, as well as Eva Lechner, who came 25th at the Cross-Country World Championships in Lenzerheide at the weekend. The woman from Eppan has already made her way to Belgium, where she will take part in a cross-country race at the weekend.

Marathon specialist Fabian Rabensteiner was also missing from the celebrations. He would have taken part in the World Championships in Auronzo next weekend, but had a serious fall during training and had to cancel the World Championships (SportNews reported) . The man from Villandro won the bronze medal at the European Marathon Championships in March. Also national squad at European Championships In addition to the mountain bikers who were nominated for Italy at the World Cup and European Championships, some athletes in the U17 age group also competed for the South Tyrolean national squad at the European Championships in the Aosta Valley. In the U17 girls, Noemi Plankensteiner from SV St. Lorenzen shone for the state squad with 6th place, Christina Thurner from Nals took 46th place.
