10 South Tyroleans start the Tour Transalp

Brixen and Kaltern are two stage locations in South Tyrol. The crossing of the Alps by racing bike ends on June 29, 2019 in Riva on Lake Garda.

The start will take place for the first time in Innsbruck, venue for the 2018 UCI Road Cycling World Championships. From the North Tyrolean state capital, the route goes to Brixen on the first day. The second stage leads from the episcopal city to Kaltern. The convoy then leaves South Tyrol towards Lombardy (Bormio, Livigno, Aprica) and Trentino (Ossana am Sulzberg), before the Tour Transalp ends after seven stages on June 29th in Riva del Garda (TN).

This year's highlights include crossing the Penserjoch, Mortirolo, Gavia, Umbrail and Bernina passes. The route over the Alps leads, among other things, through the unique landscape of the Stelvio mountains and the Adamello-Brenta Naurpark.

The South Tyrolean starters This year, ten South Tyrolean cyclists are taking part in the stage race, including Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno, who took second place in the men's race together with Tyrolean Daniel Pechtl two years ago. Other starters are Thomas Grüner, Christian Platzgummer, Hannes Schlögl, Anna Pfitscher, Thomas Haller, Harald Hofer, Michael Oberrauch, Christian Resch and Richard Palma.

South Tyrolean athletes have won the Tour Transalp 16 times so far. The winners include Werner Weiss, Andreas Laner, Philipp Götsch, Andreas Kofler, Stefano Casassa, Marina Illmer, Alexandra Hober, Petra Dibiasi, Marco Poier, Walter Platzgummer and Hannes Pallhuber. From Trentino, MTB world champion Massimo Debertolis, Silvano Janes/Gabriele Valentini, Marcellina Dossi and Cinzia Bertoldi have so far climbed to the top podium.

Since the first edition of the Transalp 16 years ago, South Tyrol has provided a stage location 33 times. Kaltern, Brixen and St. Vigil in Enneberg have been the most frequently visited so far. This year there are 6 categories For the first time this year, individual riders will also be allowed to take part in the stage race for teams of two. That's why there are six categories: men, women, mixed, masters (men, together over 80 years old), Grandmasters (men, together over 100 years old) and individual riders.

The Tour Transalp took place for the first time in 2003: It is considered one of the hardest, most beautiful and most spectacular stage races for amateur racing cyclists.
