Giro: Outsider prevails

The expected fight for the pink jersey didn't materialize on the mountain stage, but the race for the day's victory generated a lot of excitement. After the cyclists treated themselves to an active rest day on the flat 6th stage of the Giro, the 7th stage from Diamante to Potenza was full on from kilometer zero onwards. On the selective 196 kilometers there was barely a meter flat, eight climbs and a total of over 4.500 meters of altitude awaited the riders.

After countless attacks from the peloton, including Mathieu van der Poel trying several times, it took 80 kilometers until the breakaway group of the day was determined. After the mountain classification leader Lennard Kämna fell back into the peloton with a technical defect, the riders Walter Poels (Bahrain–Victorious), Diego Andres Camargo (EF-Easy Post), Davide Villella (Cofidis), Davide Formolo (UEA-Emirates) remained. , Tom Dumoulin and Koen Bouwman (Jumbo-Visma) left at the top.

The six breakaways worked well together and quickly extended their lead to over five minutes. The Dutchman Bouwman secured all mountain classifications and catapulted himself into the blue leadership jersey. Things remained quiet in the group of overall favorites, the music was played at the front. On the last climb in the 4th category, first the Colombian Camargo and shortly afterwards the Italian Villella had to be demolished.

After countless attacks and counter-attacks, none of their opponents were able to break away decisively in the last 20 kilometers. In the last kilometers, the 2017 Giro d'Italia winner Tom Dumoulin pulled ahead of his compatriot and actual helper Bouwman in the sprint. Thanks to an irresistible start on the slightly uphill home straight, the 28-year-old secured only his second professional victory, the first in one of the three Grand Tours.

The group led by overall leader Juan Pedro Lopez sprinted to the finish line three minutes behind, led by Lennard Kämna, and there were no changes in the rankings.
