Tour of the Basque Country: Schachmann scores third trick

Arrigorriaga (SID) Professional cyclist Maximilian Schachmann continued his winning streak in the 59th Tour of the Basque Country and celebrated his third stage success with a very strong performance. After 25 km between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Arrigorriaga, the 163,6-year-old Berliner from Team Bora-hansgrohe prevailed in the sprint of a four-man leading group ahead of the Slovenian Tadej Podacar (UAE-Team Emirates). Schachmann, who previously won the time trial on the opening day and the third stage on Wednesday, extended his lead in the overall standings and now leads his teammate Patrick Konrad (Austria) by 51 seconds. Schachmann could be the second German to win the “Itzulia” after Andreas Klöden (2000/2012). On the demanding stage with four mountain classifications, including one in the first category, Schachmann confidently parried all attacks in the pouring rain on the last climb shortly before the finish, and shortly before the summit he and three other riders broke away. On Friday, Schachmann's overall lead could come into serious danger when the penultimate stage from Arrigorriaga to Arrate (149,8 km) ends with a crisp final climb over 5,9 km and around 300 meters in altitude. The final stage on Saturday around Eibar is also something for climbing specialists with two climbs in the first category and one in the second category.
