How far can a person cycle in an hour? What the marathon world record means to track and field athletes, the hour world record means to cyclists. The first world record dates back to 1876 and was 26,50 kilometers. Legends like Moreno Moser, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Mercx held the record. Now Campenaerts has snatched the record from an “amateur driver”: The 32-year-old Briton Dan Bigham failed to beat the Belgian’s mark last fall. On Friday he drove 55,548 kilometers, almost 500 meters further than the previous record from 2019. The last records were all set at an altitude of 1.900 meters in Mexico because the air density is lower there and a body can glide through the air faster . He started cycling during his studies Bigham set the record on the track in Grenchen, just 405 meters above sea level. His story is extraordinary: It was only during his engineering studies that the Englishman started first with triathlon and later with cycling, competed in amateur races and founded his own team on the track, which, thanks to new aerodynamic approaches and equipment, is the only private team with the major national teams - until the world association put a stop to it. Bigham is the founder of a company that produces special parts for time trial bikes, worked as a TV expert and as an aero consultant for Primoz Roglic and Wout van Aert, and is now employed by Team Ineos. Thanks to targeted preparation and, above all, high-tech material worth an estimated 30.000 euros, the aero guru achieved the world record. Experts estimated that he had to pedal around 150 watts less than Wiggins when he set his record in 2015 (around 440 watt average).
