Sensation in Munich: A man from Leifer is vice-European champion

Bianchi had already indicated his strong form in the qualification in the morning. There he not only set the second best time in the field, but also the Italian record! The 20-year-old from Leifer had legitimate hopes of winning a medal.

In the final, the top eight drove in reverse order. When it was Bianchi's turn second to last, the German Maximilian Dörnbach was occupying the top spot on the podium. But Matteo showed off big from the start. A green number lit up at all intermediate times and in the end the man from Bolzano (1.00,089 minutes) remained 13 hundredths of a second ahead of the German.

But it wasn't over yet. Melvin Landerneau entered the track as the fastest man in qualifying - and got off to a bad start. The Frenchman was always behind the Leifer man in the first intermediate times and for a long time it looked as if Bianchi could even win gold. The young South Tyrolean sat hopefully on the sidelines and watched his French opponent. At the end, Landerneau turned up the heat and relegated Bianchi to second place with a lead of 11 hundredths. With a time of 2 seconds, he was the only one who stayed under a minute in the final. In great shape But that won't dampen Bianchi's joy. With the silver medal at the European Championships, he not only secured South Tyrol's first precious metal in Munich, but also set a major milestone in his career. And he has underlined his fantastic form: in mid-July he won two gold medals in the U23 class at the European Track Cycling Championships in Anadia, Portugal.
