Chaves wins Giro spectacle on Etna

The Colombian Esteban Chaves triumphed at the Giro d'Italia in the first big showdown of the favorites. At the spectacular mountain finish on Etna in Sicily, the 28-year-old from the Mitchelton-Scott team came out on top after 164 km at an altitude of 1736 m, ahead of his teammate Simon Yates (Great Britain), who thus took the overall leader's pink jersey from Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC ) took over. “It’s incredible, such a comeback after my long injury break,” said Chaves, who broke his shoulder blade in a fall in September 2017.

Yates caught up with Chaves shortly before the end, but left his teammate to win the day. "Esteban was at the front all day, he deserved the win," said the 25-year-old Yates: "I knew I had pink, that makes me very happy."

The recently weakened top favorite Christopher Froome (Great Britain/Sky) repeatedly had difficulties in the final, but finished tenth in the first chasing group alongside defending champion Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands/Sunweb), 26 seconds behind Chaves, the last remaining member of one was a large outlier group.

Giro moves to the mainland From Friday the Giro will continue on the Italian mainland, initially with the 159,0 km long flat stage between Pizzo and Praia a Mare in Calabria. The next mountain finish follows on Saturday at an altitude of 1260 m at the monastery of Montevergine, which is, however, significantly easier than the climb on Etna.
