Claudia Schuler ready for the start of the World Cup in Castiglione di Pescaia

Since Wednesday, the South Tyrolean handbiker has been with the Italian national team at the training camp in Castiglione della Pescaia, where the first World Cup stage of the year will take place from Friday to Sunday. “I was here with the national team a few weeks ago to test the route. These days we've been putting the finishing touches on it. I will use the remaining time until tomorrow’s race to recover a bit,” says Schuler in a short interview with SportNews.

She will compete in a total of two races in Castiglione della Pescaia: “I will take part in both the time trial on Friday and the road race on Saturday. However, I expect a better chance of a top placing in the road race, as the course is better tailored to my characteristics. In the time trial, the route is too flat for me,” explains the 24-year-old from Vinschger, who sees the first World Cup primarily as a test to find out where she stands.

“Get the most out of myself”

In the current season, Schuler has already competed in two international races in Rosenheim and Verolanuova, where she was in great early form. While she narrowly missed the podium in fourth place in Rosenheim, she made a statement last weekend at the race in the province of Brescia with a victory in the road race and a third place in the time trial.

“I want to get the most out of myself this season and show what my body can do. In the past I often thought too much before races. This year I want to try to turn my head off as much as possible and just ride,” concluded the multiple Italian champion and two-time World Cup medalist.

After the race in Castiglione di Pescaia she will allow herself a week's rest. Then she will go to Switzerland, where she will compete in an international race at the end of May. One of the highlights of the season is certainly the World Cup in Greenville in the USA at the end of August.
