The “Around Italy” cycling race is celebrating its anniversary in South Tyrol

When the Giro d'Italia set its first stage destination in Meran 100 years ago, the South Tyrolean local press was still reporting on the “Around Italy” cycling race. The German readership, not yet fluent in Italian, could not have imagined anything about the Giro d'Italia. Today the tour, which touches South Tyrol on Wednesday in Canazei, is deeply anchored in the local sports culture.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Giro in South Tyrol, s+ is reviewing the local Giro history with an interactive graphic - from the first arrival in Meran to the last in Antholz, with legends such as Gino Bartali and Marco Pantani in 53 stages entered the winners lists. You can read the whole story by author Norbert Parschalk with s+.
