The truck driver stopped, looked for the rebel and fled

A 62-year-old German truck driver, who works for a freight forwarding company from North Rhine-Westphalia, returned to his homeland after the accident. Charges were brought against him, including for hit-and-run. However, since the offense of “homicide in traffic” does not exist under Italian law in Germany, the suspected perpetrator cannot be arrested for the time being.

As eyewitnesses consistently reported, contrary to initial reports, the driver of the semi-trailer noticed the accident and did not drive on immediately. He even left his driver's cab and walked towards the rebel lying on the ground, but then turned around and continued his journey. Photos of this shocking scene helped investigators identify the man.

The truck driver ran over Rebellin as he exited a roundabout into a parking lot. He stopped there to check the undercarriage of his vehicle and went to Rebellin before getting behind the wheel again. Traces of blood in the parking lot are said to come from the accident.

According to Italian media, the German is said to have been responsible for another hit-and-run accident in Italy, and the carabinieri also took away his driver's license in 2014 for drunk driving. The investigation, which was conducted jointly with the German and Austrian police, revealed that the truck driver was heading towards Verona.

Death after 30-year professional career 51-year-old Davide Rebellin was one of the most popular Italian cyclists. He made his professional debut in 1992, won Olympic silver in 2008 and celebrated a total of 62 professional victories. After three decades of professional sport, he only took part in his last professional race in Monaco two weeks ago and has completed several hundred thousand kilometers on his bike over the course of his career.

On one of his first rides as a retired professional, he was mostly riding his gravel bike away from traffic and was said to have died instantly upon impact. According to information from the “Gazzetta dello Sport”, his body will now be autopsied, which means the funeral originally planned for next Wednesday will likely be postponed.
