Duel Van der Poel vs. Van Aert goes into the next round

Belgium's most popular one-day race is known for its narrow, bumpy roads, tight corners and rough climbs, most of them cobbled. Conditions in northern Belgium are often harsh.

A Belgian, a Dutchman and a Frenchman emerge as the top favorites. Last year's winner Mathieu van der Poel will be challenged by Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe. When one of the trio competes, the competition can only be amazed.

Van Aert is the great hope of the home fans. The captain of the Jumbo-Visma team fought a duel with his permanent Dutch rival Van der Poel at the autumn edition of the “Ronde” last October. In the end, of the two multiple cross world champions, Van der Poel came out on top in the two-man sprint. Road world champion Julian Alaphilippe, however, overlooked a support motorcycle that was slowing down and was so seriously injured in the collision that he had to give up the race. Usual route Like last year, the Tour of Flanders will once again have to do without spectators due to the corona pandemic. The route appears practically unchanged. The first 100 km are relatively flat, only then does it get really hard on cobblestones. 27 km from the finish is the Kruisberg, which is often used for decisive attacks. Then Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg follow, before the last 13 km are flat to the finish.
