A home win at the Giro d'Italia

The Italian Alberto Dainese won the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday.

After the 25 kilometer long, flat section from Pergine Valsugana to Caorle, the 197-year-old DSM driver won the finish sprint ahead of his compatriot Jonathan Milan and the Australian Michael Matthews. Patrick Konrad also crossed the finish line with the peloton and took 46th place. In the overall ranking, the Briton Geraint Thomas is still ahead.

The former Tour de France winner Thomas still has an 18 second lead over the Portuguese Joao Almeida. Behind him lurks the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (+0:29 minutes).

For Dainese it was the second stage success on a major tour, after he had also won the eleventh stage of the Giro in a sprint last year. There are still three stages in the Dolomites before the Tour of Italy, which is being held for the 106th time, ends on Sunday with a flat section in Rome.
