Some innovations in the 44th edition of the Giro delle Dolomiti

Numerous new features characterize the Dolomites cycling tour 2020, which will take place in eight months - from July 19th to 25th. In addition to a stage that is driven entirely in Trentino in the Brenta Dolomites, the newly introduced Giro Sprints represent the biggest innovation. The 600 participants who can take part in the individual stages each day can look forward to a top-class Giro delle Dolomiti in summer 2020. A Giro that will offer cyclists from the expected 30 different nations a deep insight into the northernmost region of Italy, but at the same time will demand everything from them.

Within a week the cyclists cover 660 kilometers with an altitude difference of almost 12.000 meters. “Compared to last year, the total route length has remained almost the same, but the participants will have to climb around 2000 meters more in altitude,” said OK President Simon Kofler. The organizers are responding to a large-scale survey with 435 participants that they conducted a few weeks ago. One of the findings was that the fitness level of the athletes was above average. Giro start on Sunday, July 19, 2020 The Giro delle Dolomiti 2020 begins on Sunday, July 19th with the first stage into the Mendel Paradise. From Bolzano the cyclists go over the Mendel Pass to Sarnonico, Fondo and Our Lady in the Forest over the Gampen Pass and Lana through the Adige Valley back to Bolzano. On the second day of the Giro the motto is: “Off to the Alpe di Siusi!” This section is in the program for the third time in a row, but this time the largest high alpine pasture in Europe is approached from Val Gardena.

The third stage on Tuesday, July 21st takes the participants to the Brenta Dolomites. For once the starting point is not Bolzano, but Mezzocorona. “In our 43-year history we are going to this area for the first time, where we drive past Lake Molveno and later through Madonna di Campiglio. So it is a completely new stage with which we would like to honor the beauty of the “Dolomiti del Brenta”. I am sure that it will be very well received by the participants,” explained Luca Gransinigh, who recently enthusiastically completed the section on his racing bike. The professional cyclists competing in the Giro d'Italia will also be on parts of this stage in May 2020. The circumnavigation of the Sellastock is the queen stage But back to the Giro delle Dolomiti: After a rest day on Wednesday, July 22nd, the queen stage awaits the international starting field on Thursday. Then the longest distance of 160,3 kilometers with the most elevation gain (3303) takes place around the legendary Sella stick. “We should actually have this stage in the program every year because of its beauty. In 2020 it's that time again and that alone is certainly a reason for many cyclists why they won't miss the 44th Giro delle Dolomiti," continued Simon Kofler at the media event in Bolzano. By the way, there will be two mountain time trials as part of this stage.

The penultimate section takes the Giro entourage on Friday, July 24th to the Rosengarten area, first via the Völser Straße to Tiers, via the Niger Pass to Welschnofen and via Gummer with its nine rhythmic hairpin bends and Steinegg back to Bozen. The 2020 Dolomites cycling tour will conclude on Saturday, July 25th with the team time trial in the lowlands, which has now become a tradition. “I think we managed to create a great mix of stages again, both in terms of the differences in landscape and in terms of the technical difficulties,” said Luca Gransinigh with conviction. Strengthen your sporting character with the Giro Sprints The biggest news of the Giro delle Dolomiti 2020 are the Giro Sprints already mentioned at the beginning, with which the organizers are also reacting to the findings of the large-scale survey. “In addition to the mountain time trials, we will include shorter timed sections on four stages. These are two kilometers long and the gradient is not very steep. In this way we would like to strengthen the sporty character of our tour and at the same time accommodate those drivers who may find it more difficult to ride off-road. We are convinced that the Giro delle Dolomiti will gain in excitement with the Giro Sprints,” said Kofler and Gransinigh in unison.

Another innovation presented by the Bolzano organizers was a collaboration with the international aid organization World Bicycle Relief. “To date, this organization has delivered around half a million bicycles to Africa, South America and Southeast Asia and trained over 2.200 bicycle mechanics to enable people in rural developing countries to have greater mobility with bicycles. We supply clothing to World Bicycle Relief and will also provide a portion of our registration fee. I am very proud of this cooperation, because there couldn't have been a better charity organization for a cycling event like ours," said OK President Simon Kofler enthusiastically.

The busy organizing committee still attaches great importance to the issue of environmental protection. The brochure has been significantly slimmed down, but it is impressive in terms of design. The Giro organizers have also decided not to use plastic bags or packaging at the refreshment points. Registrations are open - registration fees remain unchanged The “base camp” of the Giro delle Dolomiti remains the Bolzano trade fair this year. “For our needs and as far as logistics are concerned, the Bolzano trade fair is still perfect. She has been our partner for many years and the collaboration has proven very successful. One piece of news regarding the next Giro is that we will offer all participants a breakfast at the Bolzano Trade Fair. Such initiatives, which further strengthen our family-friendly atmosphere, set us apart and differentiate us from other events. They are also a reason why numerous participants take part every year,” said Simon Kofler and concluded by explaining the participation fees for the 44th Giro delle Dolomiti.
