Close race at the Giro d'Italia - Guerreiro wins stage 9

The overall first, João Almeida, lost a few seconds to his biggest rivals on Sunday after 208 kilometers from San Salvo to Roccaraso in the breakaway victory of his Portuguese compatriot Ruben Guerreiro. The two-time overall winner Vincenzo Nibali also had to let up a bit. Almeida reached the finish 1:56 minutes behind. This reduced his lead over the now second-placed Dutchman Wilco Kelderman from the German Sunweb team to 30 seconds. The Spaniard Pello Bilbao (0:39 minutes back), the two Italians Domenico Pozzovivo (0:53) and Nibali (0:57) as well as the Dane Jakob Fuglsang (1:01) occupy the next places in the overall ranking. The day's victory went to Guerreiro, who prevailed on the final climb ahead of fellow Spanish breakaway Jonathan Castroviejo. Meanwhile, the five teammates of Briton Simon Yates, who tested positive for the coronavirus, continued the race. All drivers were checked repeatedly but showed no abnormalities. Yates, who originally entered the race as one of the favorites, went into quarantine on Saturday after testing positive. Around the first day of rest on Monday, all drivers and supervisors will be tested for the virus. At the Giro, however, the rules are not so strict that a team has to travel home if there are two corona cases. The Giro continues on Tuesday with the tenth stage over 177 kilometers from Lanciano to Tortoreto.
