Fabio Aru has big plans for the “Tour of the Alps”.

When fans and experts talk about climbs and mountains, it's never long before the name Fabio Aru comes up. No wonder, the 27-year-old Sardinian has won at least one stage in all three major tours (Giro, Tour and Vuelta) in his career and has also slipped into the overall leader's jersey. In 2015 he even won the overall victory at the Vuelta a España.

This year, the new addition to the UAE Team Emirates team has focused on the Giro d'Italia and the World Cycling Championships in Tyrol. In this respect, the Tour of the Alps in mid-April represents one of the key races for the Italian champion's season, who wants to fine-tune the “Corsa Rosa” on the roads of the Euregio and at the same time the course of the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck will be examined more closely. “As usual, at the Tour of the Alps I will find very demanding routes on which I want to cut a good figure and at the same time prepare myself as best as possible for the Giro d'Italia. There is also another reason to be highly motivated for the race: Because the World Championship is one of my goals for the season, I don't want to miss the opportunity to race on the course in Innsbruck. I haven't been able to see it yet, but it seems very difficult. Being able to host a race on this track, so long before the event, is an opportunity that cannot be missed,” explained Aru.

The 27-year-old from Villacidro, who is currently completing a targeted training program with a view to his return to racing at the Tour of the Alps, wants to follow in the footsteps of his former teammate Vincenzo Nibali, who won the Giro d'Italia for the first time in 2013, after he had recently won the Giro del Trentino. Nibali is also the last racing driver to achieve the demanding double.

“The preparation is going according to plan. I recovered well from the accident at the Volta a Catalunya and was able to train without any problems. My goal is to start with good legs. What will happen in the race is impossible to predict beforehand,” the Sardinian continued.

A week before the start in Arco (Trento), the winner of the 2015 Vuelta does not want to make any predictions. “At this point it is very difficult to make an assessment. I know my opponents in the Tour of the Alps very well: In addition to Froome and Pinot, there is Miguel Angel Lopez, who was my teammate for a long time, while I train a lot with Pozzovivo on the streets of Lugano. I’ll have to keep an eye on them all!”

On April 18th, the third stage leads from Auer via Mendel and Gampen Pass to Meran (138,3 km), and on April 19th it goes from Klausen to Lienz in East Tyrol (134,3 km).

After his fall at the Volta a Catalunya, the Sardinian mountain specialist is back in the racing action in the stage race in the Euregio Trentino, South Tyrol and Tyrol countries. The cycling classic runs from April 16th to 20th.
