Giro: Benedetti with the next coup for Bora

After two successes by sprint star Pascal Ackermann (Germany), teammate Cesare Benedetti won the 158 kilometer long twelfth stage from Cuneo to Pinerolo as a breakaway. On the first difficult mountain stage, the Italian won the finish sprint in a group of seven ahead of his compatriot Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Merida) and the Irishman Eddie Dunbar (Ineos).

“I’m really very happy, I’m really excited,” explained Benedetti after the Bora-hansgrohe team’s 24th win of the season: “The team is working wonderfully.”

New leader in the overall standings In the overall standings, Italian Valerio Conti (UAE Team Emirates) had to hand over the pink jersey to his teammate Jan Polanc. “Going into the breakaway today was a team tactic to have better control of the race. “So we wanted to keep the Maglia Rosa in the team,” explained Polanc after crossing the finish line. The Slovenian crossed the finish line in sixth place with the leading group and now leads with a lead of 4:07 minutes over his compatriot Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and 4:51 minutes ahead of Conti. Top favorite Roglic was put under a lot of pressure 30 kilometers from the finish on the first climb in the first category of this year's Giro. The 29-year-old, who was isolated from his teammates early on, was unable to parry an attack from direct competitors Miguel Angel Lopez (Colombia/Astana) and Mikel Landa (Spain/Movistar), but rolled to the finish with the other top favorites on the downhill and flat sections within 30 seconds of the duo, keeping the damage limited.

On Friday, the favorites for overall victory must finally put their cards on the table. On the 198 kilometer long section from Pinerolo to Ceresole Reale, the first mountain finish is on the program at the Lagu Serru reservoir at over 2000 meters. The Tour of Italy ends on June 2nd after 3578,8 km in Verona.
