Giro: Carapaz is getting closer and closer to overall victory

With Colombian Esteban Chaves' breakaway success on the 19th and third-to-last stage of the 102nd Tour of Italy, the 26-year-old easily maintained his pink leadership jersey and goes into the final weekend with an advantage of almost two minutes over Vincenzo Nibali (Italy/Bahrain-Merida).

While Carapaz kept his competitors at bay with the help of his Spanish team Movistar, Chaves (Mitchelton-Scott) proved to be the strongest rider in a twelve-man breakaway group on the section in the Dolomites. After an attack shortly before the mountain finish after 151 km in San Martino di Castrozza, Chaves maintained a narrow lead of ten seconds over the Italian Andrea Vendrame (Androni Giocattoli).

But Carapaz still has to fend off a few attacks before his overall victory is certain. The difficult 20th stage on Saturday to Monte Avena (194 km) offers the final opportunity to create big gaps. For the time trial on Sunday, the climbing specialist from the Andes probably needs a certain cushion in front of Nibali and Primoz Roglic (Slovenia/Jumbo-Visma). Nibali is in second place, 1:54 minutes behind Carapaz, Roglic follows with a gap to the Maglia Rosa of 2:16 minutes.
