Giro delle Dolomiti: Gschnitzer and Meyer take overall victory

The fifth stage on Friday demanded everything from cyclists from 23 different nations over a total distance of 114,8 kilometers with an altitude difference of almost 3.000 meters. From the Trento Trade Fair we went south to Aldeno, finally to Lake Cei and over the Bordala Pass to Arco. The field then drove north past Lake Cavedine and Lake Toblino before the 21 kilometer long mountain time trial with an altitude difference of 1.199 meters on Monte Bondone began a little later. Thrilling duel: Sterzing against Colombia Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno and the Colombian Antonio Donado once again played the leading roles. As in the first four sections, the duo delivered a thrilling head-to-head race, with Donado ultimately winning with a time of 54.18,25:26 minutes. Because Gschnitzer only lost 37 hundredths of a second to the XNUMX-year-old South American, the Wipptaler defended the white Giro Leader jersey and was the overall winner at Monte Bondone. Nerve-wracking week for Gschnitzer “I have more than achieved my goal of defending my title and I am of course overjoyed that it worked out. It's been brutally nerve-wracking the past two or three days. I would have preferred if the starting position had been a little clearer - perhaps also in Antonios Donado's favor. I don't really like such short stories. “It was a great week, I made a lot of new acquaintances and that’s what makes the Giro delle Dolomiti so special for me,” was Gschnitzer’s first reaction at the finish.

“It was a brutally hard week. It was extremely hot again today at the start. I made a few attacks during the mountain time trial, but Thomas always reacted immediately and was ready. I crossed the finish line just ahead of him, but it wasn't enough to take overall victory. “Nevertheless, I am very satisfied and grateful – also for this great experience and the very good organization,” said Donado. Third place in both the mountain time trial on Friday and in the overall ranking went to the Spaniard Iraitz Goñi Diaz, who held his own against Raphael Tiziani from Bolzano. Five on five: Meyer continues his victory tour Janine Meyer continued her impressive winning streak among the women. The 43-year-old from Cologne also won the fifth stage on Friday. In 1:01.20,72 hours, the German achieved the 10th fastest time overall and won the overall ranking, in which she came ninth overall (!). Meyer's worst opponent was also strong: Julia Jederlhauser from Marktoberdorf im Allgäu landed in 1th place in the overall ranking on Friday in 03.48:15 hours.

“The toughest thing today was that the mountain time trial took place almost at the end of the stage. It was also very hot at the beginning. On the timed section it was cloudy and it started to drizzle lightly - which was extremely pleasant. “I am of course very happy about the overall victory,” Meyer dictated into the recording devices of the media representatives present.

The Giro delle Dolomiti was once again a complete success.

Everyelhauser said: “The profile of the route certainly suited me a little today because it wasn’t completely flat, but not extremely steep either. I just like medium inclines like this. At the end the rain was a relief and pleasant for me too, because it was very warm beforehand.” Ursula Armbruster, also from Germany, ended up in third place in the daily ranking and also defended this position in the classification.

The 45th Giro delle Dolomiti will conclude on Saturday with the now traditional team time trial (7,9 kilometers/8 meters in altitude), which will be run in Romagnano on part of the route on which the European Cycling Championships were held last year. The entire stage, which begins in the city center of Trento, is 25,7 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 84 meters.
