Giro delle Dolomiti rerouted after Muren exit – Rizzi continues to lead

Manuel Giacomelli had already had a sniff of victory in the two stages on Monday and Tuesday. However, the Colombian Sebastian Mejia set the best time on the Würzjoch, while Eduard Rizzi climbed the Fedaia Pass faster. But this Thursday Giacomelli was unbeatable for once. The 42-year-old cyclist from Predazzo rode the 20.53 kilometers with 9,3 meters of elevation gain from St. Kassian up to the Valparola Pass in 556 minutes and relegated Rizzi and Mejia to places.

“My focus today was just not to let the Colombian move away. I managed that well. Congratulations to Manuel, who rode really well. Now it's time to master tomorrow's last individual stage well and then we'll see what happens at the end," said Eduard Rizzi at the finish at the 2168 meter high pass. The soon-to-be 48-year-old Sarner is 33 seconds ahead of Mejia in the overall ranking, while Rizzi's teammate from the sports team Simone Piccina is already over two minutes behind in third place. Change in leadership among women There was also a new winning face among the women on Thursday. Lorna Ciacci from Bolzano, who did not take part in the first three stages, won the mountain time trial in 25.52 minutes. Tanja Cais from Salzburg came in second, with the stopwatch stopping after 26.43 minutes. Third place once again went to the Dutchwoman Annette Pronk, who was two seconds slower than Cais.

The new overall leader at the Giro delle Dolomiti 2019 is fourth-placed Monika Dietl from Freising in Bavaria. Last year's winner is more than two and a half minutes ahead of Pronk in the overall ranking after four of five individual stages. The previous Giro leader, Esther Frei from Winterthur in Switzerland, did not start on the fourth section (126,3 km/2161 m altitude). The best South Tyrolean in the overall ranking is Klausner Ruth Zemmer in fourth place. The participants in the 43rd Giro delle Dolomiti went from Brunico through the Val Badia to the Valparola Pass on Thursday as part of the fourth stage. In the meantime, the organizers had to demonstrate their talent for improvisation.
