Giro delle Dolomiti: Vermeulen and Dietl win the start

On the 19 kilometer long timed section with an altitude difference of 1398 meters, the Belgian Daan Vermeulen and Monika Dietl from Germany had the upper hand. In total, around 700 cyclists from 33 different nations covered 163 kilometers and 1859 meters in altitude at the start with start and finish in Bolzano.

After the start of the mountain time trial in St. Leonhard/Passeier, Vermeulen initially pedaled in a group of several people before increasing the pace after around 3 kilometers. None of his competitors had anything to counter the attack and so the 23-year-old from Ghent rode alone towards victory. With a time of 57.40 minutes, he was the only cyclist to stay under the 1-hour mark and rode an average speed of 19,77 km/h. “It was tough to ride alone at the front for so long. But in the end it paid off. I love Granfondos and the mountains – the Giro delle Dolomiti is the perfect race for me,” said Vermeulen, who is taking part in the Dolomites cycling tour for the second time. Manuel Giacomelli from Trentino took second place (1:01.57), while Jaime Corredor from Colombia came third (1:02.03). As the best South Tyrolean, Eduard Rizzi from Sarnen came in 4th place (1:02.07).

Among the women, top favorite Dietl was ahead. The 39-year-old from Freising in Bavaria reached the top of the pass after 1:16.01 hours. “It was pretty good today to start with. I actually always drove up the Jaufen from the other side, i.e. from Vipiteno. “I’m particularly looking forward to the classics this week, like the Sellaronda and the Stilfser Joch,” said the day’s winner, who beat the Swiss Mirjam Bebi (1:19.41) and Esther Frei (1:20.06). The best “Azzurra” was Barbara Zamborri from Trentino (8th/1:25.49). Ilse Pfeifer (1:27.26) came in ninth place as the best South Tyrolean. The cyclist from Eggen had prepared for the Giro delle Dolomiti this year in collaboration with the organizing committee with a very special program. The training seems to have borne fruit. Like Arild Toft, 60 years old from Stavanger in Norway and a manager at the oil company Aker-BP. Toft has taken part in the Dolomites cycle tour every year since 2005 and inspires several dozen fellow countrymen to do the same every year. This year Toft was able to inspire 37 Norwegians for the Giro delle Dolomiti. “I like being here because I love nature and the good weather. The Giro delle Dolomiti is, on the one hand, cycling in a relaxed atmosphere and at the same time still a challenge. “This mix makes it so unique for me and that’s why I come back every year,” says Toft, who in his best times covered 25.000 kilometers a year on his racing bike all over the world.
