Giro delle Dolomiti: Vermeulen and Dietl win the queen stage

On the timed section from Corvara up to the Val Gardena, the Belgian Daan Vermeulen and Monika Dietl from Germany had the upper hand. Both also lead the respective overall rankings.

Before the day's victory in the approximately 9 kilometer long mountain time trial between Corvara and the Gardena Pass, the cyclists first had to overcome the Sella Pass, the Pordoi Pass and the Campolongo Pass. Wonderful summer weather with a fantastic view contributed significantly to the successful circumnavigation of the Sellastock. Among the men, the Belgian Daan Vermeulen set the best time of the day. The 23-year-old completed the Val Gardena Pass in 23.18 minutes. The cyclist from Ghent, who also won the Giro opener on the Jaufenpass on Sunday, was a full 50 seconds faster than Eduard Rizzi (athlete team). The man from Sarn gave his all on the 9 kilometer long climb with 600 meters of altitude and was rewarded with second place in the end. This made Rizzi the best “Azzurro” of the third stage of the Giro. “Today I changed my tactics and started a little further back in order to complete the mountain time trial. I'm very happy with second place. “I will attack again on Thursday and Friday,” said the man from Sarn confidently. Fabio Barone completed the podium, losing 1.13 minutes to Vermeulen. The Colombian Jaime Corredor, winner of the Obereggen stage on Tuesday, had to settle for fourth place this time. In the overall standings, Vermeulen was able to extend his lead over Corredor to 5.40 minutes. Rizzi is 18 seconds behind Corredor in third place. Monika Dietl is in a class of her own Monika Dietl celebrated a flawless hat trick for the women. The 39-year-old German also won the third stage. This time the cyclist from Freising in Bavaria won with a time of 30.14 minutes. Second and third place went to the Swiss Esther Frei (+39 seconds) and Mirjam Bebi (+1.37). The best Italian on Tuesday was Barbara Zambotti from Fondo in Trentino, who came fifth. Ilse Pfeifer from Eggen took 11th place. Dietl confidently leads the overall standings and is heading for the Giro victory. Here too, Frei improved to second place, ahead of her fellow Swiss Bebi. The best Italian is Zambotti (8th), directly ahead of Pfeifer. The personality: Manuel Quinziato On the third stage there was none other than Manuel Quinziato. The 38-year-old from Bolzano competed in the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta several times, including in the dress of the renowned US racing team BMC Racing Team. In 2011 he was involved as a noble helper in the Tour de France victory of the Australian Cadel Evans, to whom he rendered valuable services as a “water carrier”. The man from Bolzano was also extremely successful at world championships, as evidenced by his two world championship titles in the team time trial (2014, 2015). Last year, Quinziato, who also drove for the Liquigas, Saunier Duval-Prodir, Lampre and Lampre-Daikin teams during his career, ended his active career. The 38-year-old now works as a cycling manager. “I’ve never sat in the saddle for so long” The man from Bolzano, who supports the Giro delle Dolomiti as an ambassador, clearly enjoyed the free ride and the circumnavigation of the Sella Group. “It was really good for me and I have to say, I've probably never sat in the saddle for as long as I did today. As I said when introducing the stages, the Dolomite passes are certainly one of the most beautiful places to cycle. Nature is unique and so is the panorama. I had plenty of time along the way to chat with the participants. Of course I was asked for tips, and one Russian cyclist in particular really pestered me. It was a very nice day,” said a visibly relaxed Manuel Quinziato.

The third stage of the 2018 Dolomites cycle tour was dedicated to the circumnavigation of the Sellastock. With a route length of 155 kilometers and 3275 meters in altitude, the 700 cyclists from 33 different nations were challenged to everything on Tuesday.
