Giro stage victory for Gaviria after jury decision

The 24-year-old from the Emirates team benefited on Monday from the original winner Elia Viviani's return on the third section from Vinci to Orbetello (220 km). The Italian had hindered a competitor in the final sprint.

Gaviria was able to celebrate his fifth Giro success ahead of Arnaud Demare and Sunday winner Pascal Ackermann. The top of the overall ranking remained unchanged after the largely flat section, as it was the day before. The Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who won the opening time trial, continues to lead. The 29-year-old from the Jumbo team is 19 seconds ahead of Brit Simon Yates and 23 seconds ahead of local hero Vincenzo Nibali.

The top stars reached the finish line in the first large group. However, several others lost time because the field split five kilometers from the end due to a crash. Previously there had been a 144 km solo escape by the Japanese Sho Hatsuyama. The field easily caught the breakaway well before the finish. The Tuesday stage from Orbetello to Frascati (235 km) is again tailored to sprinters.
