Two Brits are celebrating in Brunico

Tao Geoghegan Hart, who won the first two stages in Alpbach and Ritten, gave Team INEOS Grenadiers its fifth victory in the euregional race by beating his closest rivals on the fifth and final stage, 144,5 km from Cavalese to Bruneck had control.

Together with the Brit, his compatriot Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) and the Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious) made it onto the podium in the overall ranking. Fourth place goes to the Ecuadorian Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education-EasyPost) ahead of the first Italian, EOLO-Kometa rider Lorenzo Fortunato. The final stage went to Simon Carr (EF Education-EasyPost), who won as a soloist. The 24-year-old Brit won ahead of his teammate Georg Steinhauser and Matteo Fabbro (Bora-hansgrohe).

The fifth stage began immediately with a climb that took the athletes over 11 km from Cavalese to the Lavazè pass, the highest point of this edition at 1.808 meters. After a quick descent we went to South Tyrol, to the Eisacktal and then to the Pustertal. Once in Kiens, the race became even more exciting with a first crossing of the finish line and the start of a final circuit with the Mühlbach climb (mountain classification of the 2nd category. 7,8 km with an average gradient of 8,2%). The first 6 kilometers of this ramp were particularly challenging: here the gradient averages over 10%, with peaks of 18%.

Then there were still 19km left, here a mix of climbs and descents, which are quite selective and winding, especially in the second part, led towards the finish in Bruneck. The last 6 km to the finish were flat, and the home straight featured a slight but consistent climb. Some top South Tyrolean athletes were present at the finish in Bruneck. Dorothea Wierer, Christof Innerhofer and Simon Maurberger were among those there.
