Italian holiday at the Giro

The 25-year-old from the small team Androni Giocattoli prevailed in the sprint against his companion Valerio Conti (Italy/UAE Team Emirates) after 238 km between Cassino and San Giovanni Rotondo.

But it was also a holiday for Conti. With his courageous ride, the 26-year-old won the overall leader's pink jersey from Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who survived a fall on the stage and reached the finish well over seven minutes behind. However, Roglic voluntarily gave up the pink jersey to save his helpers from the Jumbo-Visma team some work in the coming days. He is 5:24 minutes behind Conti.

"I am very happy. I knew this could be my day. Our goal was this stage win,” said Masnada, while Conti was also happy: “This is fantastic for an Italian rider. I actually wanted to win the stage too, but Fausto was incredibly strong.”

Conti is the first Italian to wear the coveted leadership jersey since Vincenzo Nibali (2016). But he is not a driver who can, under normal circumstances, pose a threat to the Giro favorites in the crucial third week of the race.

The final phase of the seventh stage on Friday promises some excitement. After the start in Vasto and a climb in the second category, the finale in L'Aquila is particularly interesting after 185 km. The last kilometer is a steep climb, and Roglic's class riders could be fighting for valuable seconds.

Italian holiday at the Giro

The Italian professional cyclist Fausto Masnada won the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia as a successful breakaway and secured the first host victory of the 102nd edition.
