Everyelhauser and Gschnitzer take overall Giro victory

Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno and the Allgäu Julia Jederelhauser not only won the time trial from St. Zyprian/Tiers up the Niger Pass to Carezza, but also took home the overall ranking of the week-long tour. The traditional cycling event will conclude on Saturday with the team time trial in the Unterland, which no longer has any influence on the individual ranking. Thomas Gschnitzer was the benchmark in the 13,2 kilometer long mountain time trial with an altitude difference of 625 meters. The 37-year-old from Vipiteno drove at his pace from the start, gradually increased his lead and triumphed in the end with a time of 28.12 minutes and an average speed of 28,08 kilometers per hour. The Spaniard Iraitz Goñi Diaz (+1.07 minutes), the Bolzano Christian Dallago (+1.10), the Dutch Abel van der Windt (+1.12) and the Sarner Eduard Rizzi (+1.16) were a little more than one km/h slower.

Gschnitzer was already in the lead in the overall standings before the last mountain time trial and extended his lead to 2.20 minutes with his dominant victory on the day over second-placed Dallago.

“Yesterday's stages (on Thursday, editor's note) didn't suit me that well because there were some flatter sections. Today I already figured something out and gave it my all again. I didn't make an attack; I actually ran my race from the start. Of course I'm overjoyed that I've now won the Giro delle Dolomiti. But what makes me most happy is that we were able to spend such a great week among like-minded people. Now my focus is on the Ötztaler, which will hopefully be carried out,” said Gschnitzer.

“All-rounder” Jederelhauser is top The overall winner of the 44th Giro delle Dolomiti, however, is Julia Jederelhauser. The 33-year-old from Marktoberdorf, who actually competes in mountain bike races and mountain runs, was also able to win the last mountain time trial. With a time of 35.41 minutes, the Allgäu woman was six seconds faster than Francesca Sassani from Bolzano. It led from the Bolzano trade fair and Blumau via Tiers and Carezza down to Birchabruck, from there back up to Gummer and via Karneid back to the starting point. After the mountain time trial, a 2 km long Giro Sprint was also held, but this was not included in the overall ranking. Here Abel van der Windt (6.19 minutes) and Julia Jederelhauser (8.27) achieved the fastest individual times. Celebrity at the Giro On Friday, celebrities once again mingled with the almost 300-strong field of participants from 25 different nations. With Edita Pucinskaite, the 1999 road race world champion was at the start in Verona, who also won the Giro d'Italia and the women's Tour de France during her career. The 45-year-old Lithuanian is the only female cyclist in the world to win the two major tours and the world title in the road race. The Giro delle Dolomiti 2021 will conclude on Saturday with the team time trial in the lowlands. The entire stage is 86,5 km long with 402 meters of altitude, the team time trial around Kurtinig is 15,7 kilometers with 22 meters of altitude.
