John Degenkolb changes team

The 30-year-old is moving from the US team Trek-Segafredo to the Belgian racing team Lotto-Soudal. Lotto announced this on Thursday. Degenkolb will compete in his 6 Vuelta from Saturday; Degenkolb was not nominated by Trek for the Tour de France.

“In the discussions with Lotto-Soudal it became clear that we pursue the same goals. We want to shine in the classics, that’s the plan for the first part of the season,” said Degenkolb, who also wants to put himself entirely at the service of Lotto top sprinter Caleb Ewan. The Australian won three stages of the Tour, including the final section on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

“I’m still quick in the finish. I'm looking forward to riding with Caleb. He is undisputedly number 1 in the sprint, but I want to use my experience to help him and the team,” added the German.

Before Degenkolb, Lotto-Soudal had already signed former world champion Philippe Gilbert. Like Degenkolb, the Belgian is a specialist in the classics.

Degenkolb's greatest successes are 10 stage victories at the Vuelta and the double win at Milan-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix in 2015. Then came the career break. After switching to Trek in 2017, little worked, only a Tour stage success in Roubaix 2018.
