No Froome & lots of question marks: favorites of the Tour de France

The four-time winner Chris Froome from Team Ineos, who was actually considered a top contender, is out after a horror crash, and last year's second-placed Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) from the Netherlands is also not there. Geraint Thomas (33, Wales) The surprising triumph against team rival Froome made Thomas a brilliant winner last year. Since the tour, the Welshman has been honored and celebrated a lot, but there have been no sporting successes afterwards. Thomas has only completed 26 days of racing this season; he most recently crashed at the Tour de Suisse. There are some question marks behind the captain of Team Ineos. Jakob Fuglsang (34, Denmark) 36, 23, 52, 12: If you look at Jakob Fuglsang's past overall tour rankings, the Dane doesn't stand out as a favorite at first glance. But the Astana captain impressed like no other professional cyclist in 2019 and, after the Tour of Andalusia, also secured the title at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège cycling monument. He recently demonstrated his strong form with his overall victory at the Criterium du Dauphiné. The Dauphiné winner has often won the Tour in recent years. Egan Bernal (22, Colombia) The Colombian should sense his chance after Froome's exit and the weakness of last year's winner Thomas. The strong youngster underlined his strong condition with overall victories at Paris-Nice and the Tour de Suisse. During last year's tour, as a noble helper, he already showed how strong he can be in the high mountains. After Froome's failure, Ineos driver Bernal is even considered the top favorite by bookmakers - ahead of his captain Thomas. Romain Bardet (28, France) The French are longing for their first overall winner since Bernard Hinault in 1985. Courageous attacks by the mountain jersey winners Warren Barguil and Julian Alaphilippe have recently made them want more, and now it should finally be enough for the “maillot jaune”, the yellow jersey. Bardet won a stage in 2016 and 2017 and finished the Tour in second and third place. The profile of this year's tour should suit the captain of the AG2R La Mondiale team.
