Queen stage won: Pogacar extends tour lead

The 22-year-old cyclist from the Emirates team celebrated his second day's victory in the 17th edition and his fifth overall on the 178th stage with three climbs to the mountain finish on the Col du Portet (108 km). Before the last mountain stage over the Tourmalet to the mountain finish in Luz Ardiden, Pogacar leads Jonas Vingegaard (DEN) by 5:39 minutes. Last year's winner had several helpers ahead of him on the last 60 kilometers of the climbing tour over the Col de Peyresourde and the Col de Val Louron-Azet (both 1st category). In the 16 km final climb of the highest category up to 2.215 m altitude, he showed himself confidently against his remaining rivals Vingegaard (Jumbo) and ex-Giro winner Richard Carapaz (ECU/Ineos), countering an attack from Carapaz in the last meters and winning the desired victory. But the Slovenian had also exhausted himself and lay down on the asphalt after the finish. Fight until the end Pogacar had tried in vain to shake off his rivals several times in the last few kilometers. He only managed to do that in the final sprint. “Winning in the yellow jersey is an indescribable feeling,” explained the Tour dominator. He won three of the four stage races contested this year (UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of Slovenia) and was third in the Basque Country Tour. He also won the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Anthony Perez was the last rider in a breakaway group to stay at the front. But in the final, the hopes of a home win on the French national holiday were not fulfilled. The Cofidis rider was overtaken by Pogacar with 8,3 km to go. When the pace increased, Rigoberto Uran (COL), who had previously been second overall, had to let go and also fell behind Carapaz (+5:43) to fourth place (+7:17).
