Lampaert in yellow – Pogacar made his mark

Yves Lampaert wears the first yellow jersey of the 109th Tour de France. The Belgian professional cyclist surprisingly won the rainy opening time trial in Copenhagen on Friday with a five-second lead over compatriot and top favorite Wout van Aert. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar was seven seconds slower than Lampaert after 13,2 kilometers and took third place.

Much more important to the Slovenian Pogacar than his third place was the lead he gained over his competitors for the overall victory. His biggest opponent Primoz Roglic is nine seconds behind, while last year's Danish runner-up Jonas Vingegaard is one second less. “The goal is the yellow jersey, but there is still time. Everything is close together, everyone is in good shape. I look at my performance and think I’m in good shape,” said Pogacar. Lampaert was overwhelmed by his emotions. "My head explodes. I came in expecting a top ten and now I've beaten the best riders in the world. I'm just a farmer's son from Belgium. I didn’t expect that,” said the day’s winner with tears in his eyes. Rainy day in Denmark Heavy rain began to fall in Denmark's capital just over an hour before the first starter, significantly earlier than predicted. All of the top drivers had decided on early start times due to the weather - now there were almost identical conditions for everyone. The fans didn't care much about the Nordic weather; they lined the entire course and stood in several rows along the street.

The second stage on Saturday leads from Roskilde to Nyborg. Of the 2 km, the last 202,2 km are special, a large part of which goes over the Great Belt Bridge. There could be wind edges and time gaps there.
