Maratona dles Dolomites: A festival for 7.000 cyclists

The sun smiled on the almost seven thousand participants - 6871 to be exact, of which 6180 were men and 691 women - of the Maratona dles Dolomites, which was taking place for the 35th time. A marathon characterized by three routes over the Dolomite passes, inextricably linked to the history of cycling. After starting in Stern/La Villa, which was opened promptly at 6.30 a.m. as always by Michil Costa on his vintage bicycle, the queue on the pedals stretched at high speed towards the Campolongo Pass, followed by Pordoi, Sella, Grödnerjoch, Giau, Falzarego and Valparola. In addition to the long route with 138 km and 4230 m altitude difference, there was the medium route with 106 km and 3130 m altitude difference and the Sellaronda with 55 km and 1780 m altitude difference. This year too, the race was broadcast live on television from the start until the arrival of the first classified driver on the long route RAI 2 transmitted. It was the multiple marathon winner Tommaso Elettrico and the Portuguese Goncalo Freitas who attacked without hesitation and were soon alone at the front of the race. Despite the heat, the pace was high and the duel was exciting. The race still seemed to be firmly in the hands of Elettrico and Freitas when the two were overtaken by Stagni on the Falzarego. “I didn't think I could win today, but I had a good feeling this morning. When I heard that Elettrico and Freitas were a little over a minute ahead of me, I started to pick up the pace. And already on the descent from Giau I began to believe in the possibility of an unexpected victory. “I made the difference on the Falzarego Pass and now I’m standing here at the finish, with cramps all over my body, but totally satisfied,” said the winner. The final men's podium in the long distance saw Stefano Stagni in first place, completing the marathon in 4.27 hours, followed by Tommaso Elettrico (4.29) and Goncalo Freitas (4.30). A Dutch woman cheers for the women In the women's category, Marta Maltha from the Netherlands achieved a great feat. She repeated her victory last year after coming second three times by a good five minutes: “I can't believe it, I'm so happy. Winning on these streets again is wonderful for me. I hadn't expected such a time, I was with Annalisa Prato and Martina Trevisol on the Campolongo, on the Pordoi, then on the Sella I broke away and cycled to the finish alone. Splendid". To be precise, Marta Maltha cycled the long route in 5.12 hours, followed by Martina Trevisol in 5.20 hours and Annalisa Prato in 5.22 hours. In the middle distance of 106 km, Rossano Mauti, Marco Pastacaldi and Franz Wieser were in first, second and third place for the men, while for the women Lisa De Cesare was in first place, Olga Cappiello was in second place and Valeria Curnis was in third place . The winners of the Sellaronda were Davide Ferrari, Federico Aicardi and Michael Hellweger for the men and Milena Felici, Laila Orenos and Elena Valentini for the women.
