Mass falls overshadow the first stage of the Tour de France

The Frenchman won on Saturday after 197,8 kilometers from Brest to Landerneau ahead of the Australian Michael Matthews and the Slovenian Primoz Roglic. In addition, two mass crashes also dominated the race.

The first stage had a lot to offer. Right from the start there was a group of six breakaways who were able to break away from the peloton and score the first mountain classification points among themselves. After more than 100 kilometers, Ide Schelling picked up the pace and drove away from the breakaway group. Despite a strong individual performance, the Dutchman was overtaken by the peloton after around 160 kilometers at the front. Small consolation: Schelling was voted the most combative driver in the field for his performance. Violent falls A good 46 kilometers from the finish, the first mass crash occurred, triggered by an unfortunate fall by four-time time trial world champion Tony Martin. A spectator with a large cardboard sign caused the 36-year-old to fall, and several dozen riders then fell to the ground. Martin was able to continue the race with a bruised arm, but other drivers had to retire injured. 7,5 kilometers from the finish there was another crash. Again, numerous riders went down, including four-time Tour champion Chris Froome.

On Sunday the tour leads from Perros-Guirec over a 183,5 kilometer route to Mur-de-Bretagne Guerledan. The French local hero Julian Alaphilippe will start with the yellow jersey.
