Austrian Nothegger wins Ötztaler – Tappeiner 17.

238 kilometers and 5500 meters of altitude had to be overcome on the long route of the Ötztal cycle marathon with start and finish in Sölden. When the starting signal for the race was given on Sunday morning, around 4000 cyclists from all over the world set off. In one of the toughest races for everyone, the cyclists crossed the Kühtai saddle in North Tyrol, the Brenner Pass, the Jaufen Pass and the Timmelsjoch.

Around 100 South Tyroleans also took part. However, there were hardly any top placements. As the best South Tyrolean, Andreas Tappeiner from Kastelbell finished in a good 7th place in 28.56:17 hours. Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno made it into the top 7 in 36.57:26 hours in 30th place.

Michael Spögler from Sarner was at the forefront for a long time. After around 130 kilometers he was still in the leading group at the Brenner, and a little later, in Gasteig, Austria, the Sarner was even in the lead. But then Spögler fell back; when the entourage passed St. Leonhard in the Passeier Valley he was no longer at the forefront. In the end, the Sarner, who set an extremely high pace at the beginning and was able to put some favorites under pressure for a long time, took 169th place.

Alexander Polig and Lukas Bacher, both from Ratschings, came in 44th and 51st. Andreas Ploner from Bruneck took 89th place. Werner Weiss from Eppan, who made people sit up and take notice with fifth place in 2015 and came 5th last year as the best South Tyrolean, came this time not above rank 27. Nothegger ensures a home win Mathias Nothegger from Vorarlberg triumphed in 7:04.02 hours. This is the first time an Austrian has won this race since Stefan Kirchmair in 2012. The Italian Samuele Porro, who is actually a mountain bike specialist, secured second place. He finished around 2 minutes after Nothegger. Third place went to East Tyrolean Patrick Hagenaars in 5:3.

In the women's race, victory went to the Swiss Laila Orenos in 8:05.30 hours. The Austrian Anna Kiesenhofer (2:8) took second place ahead of her compatriot Nadja Prieling (12.56:8). As the best South Tyrolean, Anna Pfitscher from St. Martin in Passeier ended up in 21.21th place in 9:23.41 hours.

The Ötztal cycling marathon was a highlight in the cycling calendar on Sunday. With over 4000 starters, victory went to the Austrian Mathias Nothegger. Andreas Tappeiner from Kastelbell made it into the top 17 with 20th place as the best South Tyrolean.
