Olympic champion is now also world champion

The 28-year-old Dutchwoman won after 155,6 km from Kufstein to Innsbruck, ahead of Amanda Spratt (AUS/+ 3:42 mins) and Tatiana Guderzo (ITA/5:26).

As a team, the Dutch women showed a very strong race with a total of four starters in the top 10. Second best “Azzurra” is Elisa Longo Borghini in 13th place, Erica Magnaldi crossed the finish line in twentieth place. Mountain bike world champion Jolanda Neff set a top 7 result as her goal before the race, but in the end the Swiss had to settle for 22nd place.

At her first World Championships in the elite class, Elena Pirrone from Steinmannwald came 14.05th, 58 minutes behind. After around 50 kilometers, Pirrone was still in the leading group, but could not keep up with the pace of the favorites around van der Breggen keep up. “I'm very happy, it was a good but also tough race. When van der Breggen passed me I just couldn't keep the rhythm. But I am very happy with my first elite World Championships,” said the 19-year-old, who won both the time trial and the road race in the junior class at the 2017 World Championships.

“I gave 110% and won bronze and didn’t lose gold,” explained Tatiana Guderzo at the finish. She dedicated the medal to her father, who celebrated his birthday on Saturday. It was the 34-year-old's 16th World Championships, and with it she completed a complete set of medals: in 2009, Guderzo became world champion in the road race, and in 2004 she won the silver medal.

On Sunday the Road Cycling World Championships in Innsbruck come to an end with the men's elite race (260km). This route also leads from Kufstein to Innsbruck with a hellish 9km climb on the final lap.
