Pidcock dominance added another chapter

In the absence of some world-class drivers such as Nino Schurter, Luca Braidot, Jordan Sarrou or Mathias Flückiger, who was briefly banned for doping Tom Pidcock was the clear favorite to win the European Cross Country Championship title. After Pidcock concentrated largely on the racing bike this year and won the prestigious Alpe d'Huez stage of the Tour de France, he was missing important points for the starting grid. The favorite had to start from position 36 far back in the field and was trapped in traffic at the start of the race.

The partly artificial course in Munich's Olympic Park lacked major technical difficulties and long climbs, a lot of changes of direction and short climbs characterized the European Championship course. The Brit needed a few laps to work his way forward on the narrow course. At the halfway point of the race, Pidcock came flying in from behind and pulled away from his competitors with irresistible acceleration.

Eight men in the chasing group fought for the remaining medals until the end, including five Swiss. At the front of the race, Tom Pidcock cycled safely towards victory and put in some showmanship over the jumps in the final lap. Pidcock was the first Briton ever to be crowned European mountain bike champion. As in the previous year, the Dane Sebastian Fini Carstensen came in second behind him, while Filippo Colombo from the top nation Switzerland had to make do with third place. A total of six Swiss ended up in the top eleven despite the absence of their two best athletes. Nothing to gain for Kerschbaumer The Azzurri didn't have a top day, Daniele Braidot was the best in 16th place, Juri Zanotti was 24th. Gerhard Kerschbaumer had also hoped for more, even if the relatively simple route was not at all tailored to his qualities. After his coup at the Italian Championships a few weeks ago and his improving form, the Verdinger ended up in a disappointing 27th place, almost 3 minutes behind Pidcock at the finish.

Pidcock dominance added another chapter

23-year-old Tom Pidcock is celebrating success on the assembly line. After his Olympic victory last year, he was crowned European mountain bike champion on Friday in a superior manner. There was nothing to gain for Italian champion Gerhard Kerschbaumer on the unpopular track in Munich.
