The tour comes to a head: Pogacar wins ahead of Vingegaard

The Slovenian professional cyclist beat his Danish rival Jonas Vingegaard at the mountain finish in Peyragudes on Wednesday after 129,7 kilometers. Apart from the four bonus seconds, Pogacar was unable to make up any time. Vingegaard is now 2:18 minutes ahead of the 2020 and 2021 Tour champion. For Pogacar it was the third day win on the current tour and the ninth overall. The Slovenian had his team set a high pace in the first three of four mountain classifications. The first fruits of the work were already visible at the Col de Val Louron-Azet, the 1.580 meter high penultimate pass. Only the two-time Tour winner and Vingegaard could follow the pace of Pogacar's helper Brandon McNulty. Third overall Geraint Thomas and fourth Nairo Quintana were already left behind before the final. Shortly before the mountains classification, Pogacar made his first attack, which Vingegaard followed without any problems. So the duo went together on the final climb, where Pogacar finally prevailed. The helpers break Pogacar away The current second overall player suffered a serious setback on Wednesday morning with the failure of Rafal Majka. The Pole suffered a partial tear in his thigh muscle when his chain broke on the last mountain on Tuesday. In addition, the sick Spaniard Marc Soler fell outside the time limit on Tuesday and is out. This means that Pogacar only has one helper in the mountains, American McNulty. The Swiss Marc Hirschi and the Dane Mikkel Bjerg are more specialists for flat and hilly stages. On Thursday, however, the last stage of the Pyrenees awaits, when we go over the Col d'Aubisque and finally reach the mountain in Hautacam. Meanwhile, Tim Wellens, the twelfth rider on the tour, tested positive. The Belgian was showing mild symptoms and had to leave the race. His team announced this on Wednesday.
