Primoz Roglic wins the Vuelta for the third time

In front of the imposing cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Primoz Roglic proudly lifted his racing machine into the air. As only the third professional cyclist in the 76-year history of the Tour of Spain, the Slovenian Olympic champion raced to his third overall victory in a row and made his great cycling summer perfect on Sunday. 63 days after the painful exit from the Tour de France, the 31-year-old celebrated his dominance with a total of four stage victories, having already played with the competition in the Olympic individual time trial. In Spain, Roglic proved again what an outstanding tour driver he is. Since 2019, the man from Trbovlje has finished each of his five major tours on the podium. On the 3415,3 kilometers from Burgos to Compostela, Roglic drove in a different league. This was also the case in the final time trial over 33,8 kilometers, which he won ahead of the Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen. This put him 4:42 minutes ahead of Spaniard Enric Mas in the overall standings. The Australian Jack Haig came third, 7:40 minutes behind. Before Roglic, only the Spaniard Roberto Heras (2003 to 2005) and the Swiss Tony Rominger (1992 to 1994) had managed to win the Vuelta three times in a row. Conciliatory conclusion for Roglic “The race was hard, but I also enjoyed it,” said the former ski jumper. His renewed enjoyment of cycling was even evident in the press conferences. The previously dry and taciturn athlete seemed open-minded. The Slovenian may have surprised himself in the three weeks. Because he wasn't originally scheduled to start the Vuelta. “If he had ridden a very good Tour de France and not crashed out, his season would probably have ended very differently. “So he refocused after the tour ended and came here,” said his sporting director Addy Engels.
