Cycling World Championships in Innsbruck in the starting blocks

On Saturday, the 2018 UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be ceremoniously opened with a cycling parade through Innsbruck and an official celebration (18 p.m.) in the finish area in front of the Hofburg. Several competitions in the individual time trial, team time trial and road race disciplines are on the program until September 30th.

The team time trials for the professional teams for men and women mark the start of the race on Sunday (10.10:14.40 a.m. and 54,5:62,8 p.m. respectively). From the start in Ötztal to the finish in Innsbruck, the six-person teams have to cover XNUMX and XNUMX km respectively.

Pirrone is the youngest starter in the elite women's Italian national team. The 2017 Junior World Champion has been competing for the professional Astana team since the start of the season. At the World Championships last year she won gold in both the time trial and the road race. In their first elite year, just taking part is a huge success. Above all, the 19-year-old wants to gain experience. In the past few days, Pirrone was at the start of the “Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche” in France. A few days ago this tour came to an end with the 7th stage. Pirrone finished the stage race, which was characterized by numerous climbs, in 30th place overall. The Dutchman Tom Dumoulin was able to confidently win the world title last year. The Slovenian vice world champion Primoz Roglic is not taking part in the time trial this year and wants to concentrate entirely on the road race.

The eagerly awaited elite men's road race will be the spectacular finale of the 30 World Championships on Sunday, September 2018th. The favorites on this route include the mountain specialists, such as the newly crowned Vuelta winner Simon Yates and the "Azzurro" Vincenzo Nibali and Julian Alaphilippe from France. Peter Sagan starts as defending champion. The Slovakian won the gold medal in the road race in 2017, 2016 and 2015.

British cycling stars Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas are not taking part in the World Cup. Scott Lancester, sports director of the Sky team, announced this at the beginning of September. The duo burned out after a tough season with great success. Froome won the “Giro d'Italia” in May, and Thomas won the “Tour de France” for the first time in July, in which Froome came third.
