Starting signal for the Penser Joch Grand Prix

The ascent race from Sarnthein to the 2211 meter high pass crossing that connects the Sarntal with Vipiteno is one of the most popular domestic ascent races and has long been a classic. No wonder that a whole host of cyclists, primarily from South Tyrol, but also from neighboring provinces and neighboring countries, come to the Sarntal every year. There you will find a 26 kilometer long route with 1190 meters of elevation gain along the Alpenrosenstrasse, mainly in the final section.

After the start at 13.30 p.m. in Sarnthein (966 meters above sea level), the field of participants rolls together at a controlled speed for around 4 kilometers to Astfeld (1021 meters above sea level). This is where the mountain race really begins. But the following kilometers to Pens are not too steep either. “Driving here is mainly done in groups. Only after leaving the town of Pens behind does the road wind its way steeply up the mountain. In the fight for the day’s victory, a preliminary decision is usually made,” reports OC boss Harti Stuefer.

Pinton and Hober are the defending champions Last year, Cristian Pinton won the men's event. The cyclist from Cittadella prevailed in extremely adverse weather conditions (torrential rain, some hail) with a time of 1:05.05 hours. It was his first triumph at the Sarn classic. Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno and Andrea Zamboni from Trentino climbed onto the podium behind Pinton. In the women's race, Alexandra Hober from Meran celebrated a start-to-finish victory (1:13.09). Barbara Zambotti and Claudia Bertoncini took the places of honor.

The course record at the Penser Joch Grand Prix is held by Marina Ilmer (1:04.13 - 2013) and Philip Götsch (56.21 minutes - 2011).

At the Penser Joch Grand Prix, the best team is traditionally honored. Last year, the Trentino team Carina – Brao Caffè received the hand-carved “Moser Bau” trophy.

As part of the prize distribution, which takes place from 17.30 p.m. at the sports field in Sarnthein, the fastest three racers in each category (12 in total) as well as the cyclist who is closest to the average time of all participants will also be awarded. And if a starter breaks the course record, there will also be a bonus of 250 euros. Raffle of non-cash prizes “In addition to a nice finisher T-shirt and a voucher for the Pasta Party, the participants can look forward to the raffle of great non-cash prizes. However, the cyclists themselves must be present to receive the prizes. If that is not the case, then we will draw a new lot,” said OC boss Stuefer.

Late registrations are still possible on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 13 p.m. at the sports field in Sarnthein for 25 euros. All participants without a master racing license must present a sports doctor's certificate in order for a day license to be issued.
