Stress caused by Corona: Giro, Vuelta and Classic at the same time

The world association UCI announced the new calendar for the rest of 2020 on Tuesday after numerous race postponements. With the exception of the Road Cycling World Championships in the Swiss towns of Aigle and Martigny (September 20th to 27th), virtually all of the annual highlights had to be postponed. Highlights overlap Because all World Tour races are canceled until August 1st, the Tour, the largest cycling race in the world, also has to give way. The UCI confirmed on Tuesday the new date for the Tour de France, which will now take place from August 29th to September 20th. Then things happen in quick succession: Immediately after the tour comes the World Championships in Switzerland, before the Giro d'Italia (October 3rd to 25th) and the Vuelta (October 20th to November 8th) in this one too year should follow. The first big highlight after the break of several months is Milan-Sanremo scheduled for August 8th.

Parallel to the Giro, the traditional spring classics Liège-Bastogne-Liège (October 4th) and the Tour of Flanders (October 18th) will also be held. Paris-Roubaix (October 25th) is also planned during the Vuelta.

An example shows how difficult even the new calendar will be to implement: The national championships traditionally take place on the weekend before the tour, and in 2020 they are now scheduled for August 20th to 23rd. In Germany, the title fights have already been canceled because major events are prohibited until the end of August. According to the current status, the tour should even take place with an audience. However, numerous teams have already heard that they could also imagine a ghost tour if this aspect jeopardized the event.
