Thomas hopes to start the tour: “But there are more important things at the moment”

“It is the pinnacle of our sport, it is what it is all about. “I don’t know when the tour is supposed to start, but hopefully it will happen this year,” said the Brit from Team Ineos with the BBC . Thomas, who won the 2018 Tour de France, turns 34 in May. He won't have many chances for a second triumph. “I think I'm in my prime at the moment,” said Thomas: “My road career started a little later because I was still racing on the track. It feels like these are my best years now, so it’s a bit of a shame.” Thomas fully understands the break in professional cycling, which is suspended until at least May 31st due to the corona pandemic. “Of course there are currently more important things that need to be sorted out first. But as soon as it's safe again, we'd love to get started again. I pray and hope that it continues at some point,” said Thomas. The start of the 107th Tour de France is currently scheduled for June 27th in Nice, but it seems increasingly unlikely that this date can be kept. Ineos could send three Tour winners into the race in Thomas, four-time champion Chris Froome (Great Britain) and defending champion Egan Bernal (Colombia).
