Tom Pidcock wins on the legendary Alpe d'Huez

The Brit Thomas Pidcock has won the queen stage of the 109th Tour de France. The cross world champion and MTB Olympic champion took victory single-handedly after 165,5 kilometers from Briancon to Alpe d'Huez on the French national holiday. Pidcock laid the foundation for his success in the descent with top speeds of 110 kilometers per hour, when he broke away from the group of favorites and connected with the breakaway group.

Pidcock's rear wheel was four-time Tour champion Chris Froome. After his life-threatening fall against a house wall, he was able to show his strongest performance in three years and came third on the day. Froome was beaten by the South African Louis Meintjes, already twice in the top ten in the overall ranking of the tour, who was also close to tears at the finish after a few difficult years.
