Tour winner Vingegaard received a frenzied reception in Denmark

Thousands upon thousands of people cheered on the 25-year-old Dane as he drove from Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport in a convertible towards the city center on Wednesday and then appeared on the Copenhagen City Hall balcony in his yellow jersey of the overall winner of the Tour de France. “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me over the past three weeks. Thank you so much!” the professional cyclist shouted to the crowd on Rådhuspladsen from the balcony. He was visibly at a loss for words.

On Vingegaard's route towards the center, the Copenhagen district of Amager, with fans standing close together, at times almost resembled the legendary arrival on the Tour mountain stage to Alpe d'Huez. Vingegaard high-fived with many people from the passenger seat, while his girlfriend Trine and daughter Frida sat in the back seat. Many people waved red and white Denmark flags, others cycled alongside the vehicle in the cycling-loving capital. The crowd on the town hall square also sang the national anthem with him.

Further celebrations were later planned at the nearby Tivoli theme park, with up to 25 people expected there. On Thursday Vingegaard continues with a celebration in his hometown of Glyngøre in Jutland. The police are expecting up to 000 participants there.

On Sunday, Vingegaard became the second Dane after Bjarne Riis to win the Tour de France - fittingly in the year in which the world's largest cycling tour began for the first time in Copenhagen. Riis had triumphed at the 1996 tour as captain of the German team Telekom and was then cheered by crowds in Denmark. He later admitted extensive doping.
