Surprise in cycling: Sky gets out

The media company Sky announced on Wednesday morning that it would end the “extremely successful partnership” after the 2019 season. The collaboration with the British Cycling Association will also not be continued.

Team Sky will continue under a new name, it is said. However, the prerequisite for this is that a new donor can be found. This is likely to prove to be a difficult undertaking; the many successes of the expensive team have come at a high price. With an estimated annual budget of around 34 million euros, Sky is by far the financially strongest team.

Froome hopes The four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome hopes that the team will continue to exist beyond 2019 following the announced exit of the media group Sky.

“We want to be together in 2020 if at all possible, and we will help where we can to make sure that happens - in different colors, with a new partner, but the same values, focus and will to win,” wrote the Brit in a personal message on social media.

Since the Sky commitment began in 2010, the team has led three British riders to Tour triumph: Sir Bradley Wiggins (2012), Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017) and most recently Thomas (2018). Froome also won the Vuelta (2017) and the Giro d'Italia (2018).
