Van Avermaet wins virtual Tour of Flanders

"We are open to all scenarios. Our goal is to organize 'De Ronde' later in the year. But at the moment it is a hypothetical discussion," organizer Tomas Van Den Spiegel told Flemish TV channel VRT. The Tour of Flanders is one of the five so-called monuments of cycling; the one-day race has been held without interruption since 1919. This year's edition was supposed to take place this Sunday, but was canceled on March 17th due to the corona pandemic. Alternatively, some top drivers competed against each other in a virtual race on the last 32 kilometers of the regular route of the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The 13-strong field of riders, including last year's winner Alberto Bettiol, top talent Remco Evenepoel and sprinter Michael Matthews, were connected from their living rooms via the online platform Bkool and were able to compete on the legendary Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg climbs, among others. Rio Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet won the virtual edition of the Tour of Flanders after a successful breakaway attempt from Oliver Naesen and Nicolas Roche.

Van Avermaet wins virtual Tour of Flanders
